Keloid Scar Treatment

Laser therapy for keloid scars can be safe and effective when performed by a qualified healthcare professional with experience in treating keloids. However, it’s important to note that there are risks and potential side effects associated with any medical procedure, including laser therapy.

Your doctor will administer numbing creams or injections prior to any treatments. Some mild discomfort may be experience whilst having the injections though they enable you to feel very minimal discomfort during the treatment itself. All care is taken to ensure you have the most comfortable experience possible.

• Take care to be gentle with the treated area, avoid putting any tension in the area until healing is completed.
• For any lasting heat or pain in the area after the numbing injection has worn off, a cool compress or ice pack can be applied to alleviate discomfort. Paracetamol may also be taken.
• Void any external heat sources for 48 hours, including sauna, strenuous exercise, or hot showers in the area.
• Apply moisturiser as often as required to keep the area from drying out, this will speed up the healing time. In the event your doctor has prescribed you a cream, please follow instructions and apply accordingly.

Healing from your treatment typically occurs over 7-10 days. Remodelling of scar tissue and reductions in scar appearance may take up to 6 months for maximal improvement to become apparent. Treatments should be spaced out according to how successful healing occurs, it can be highly individual in the case of keloid scars.
